Christchurch City Council today announced that the earthquake rebuild is going to cost around $500 million.
The cash-strapped city now has to start thinking about how on Earth it is going to find that kind of money.
The Government has expressed concern about the accuracy of a damning report, and are not convinced the figures are right, so has commissioned its own report.
Christchurch mayor Lianne Dalziel says the council can't afford to take on any more debt.
Labour Party spokesperson on the rebuild and Christchurch MP Ruth Dyson discusses how Cantabrians are feeling about this announcement, and tries to see things in a positive light.
"The good part is that we know what we are facing," describes Ms Dyson on how many in Christchurch feel they have been left in the dark, and this figure can put things into perspective.
