The Prime Minister, Governor General, and leader of the opposition have joined families of those who died in the earthquake for a memorial service in Latimer Square this morning

Marking the first anniversary of the February 22 quake, the morning memorial will be a family focused affair.

However, a big screen in the second half of the park will allow the public to be part of the service too.

The New Zealand army band will play and the national anthem will be sung.

Following the service the families are invited to join a bus tour that they had to register for early this morning.

At midday, thousands are expected to attend the civic memorial service, taking place at North Hagley Park.

At 12:51pm there will be a two minute silence as a mark of respect.

All 185 names of those who died will be read out by members of the Urban Search and Rescue team and 185 Monarch butterflies will be released.

I have just watched the opening of the service and was dismayed by the opening speech by Henare Rakiiha Tau who spoke for several minutes in Maori, a language understood by probably less than 10% of the audience. Then when the translation came it was even more of a disapointment when he emphasised the divisions in New Zealand society talking about "your greif and our greif" who is you and us? presumably Maori and the rest of New Zealanders. At a commemoration of a time when all New Zealanders and foreign nationals pulled together this was a very inappropriate opening speech.
