Bones found in a Christchurch cemetery and thought to be from human remains pushed up by earthquakes are animal bones, Christchurch City Council says.

Two women walking through a cemetery in the city's eastern suburbs spotted the bones on Sunday and police said they appeared to be human remains pushed to the surface by liquefaction.

Council spokeswoman Jocelyn Ritchie told NZ Newswire five of seven bones found at the cemetery were tested by an archaeologist and they were determined to be animal bones.

The five bones were found on top of five separate graves, she said.

It was not clear what sort of animal they came from.
