Christchurch residents woke to find holes in their conservatories and spoutings after a massive hail storm last night.
Three-hundred bolts of lightning filled the night sky, followed by a severe hail storm which hammered pockets of the city for more than an hour.
Local Sonya Fabian says the noise was tremendous.
“The kids said it sounded like a bomb had gone off, and then they were collecting these big-size hail stones and putting them in the bucket,” she says.
Tyler Cleverly says he was left with 58 holes in his conservatory roof, with his glasshouse and guttering also damaged.
“It was a bit different, Mum was freaking out a little bit, I thought I’d just put her in the hallway so nothing would fall on her there. I found it quite fun actually,” he says.
Christchurch fire service area commander Greg Crawford says that over the one-hour period, the fire service responded to 15 call outs.
“We had about 15-16 call outs, the damage was certainly isolated, conservatories were succumbed to the weight of the hail, and a roof was lifted in Hornby,” he says.
Metservice says the electrical storm was a one-in-10-year event.
