A Christchurch teenager has avoided jail for a hit-and-run accident which killed a young man and injured another.
Harry Silcock, 18, hit and killed 20-year-old Sean Hutt and injured 17-year-old Kyle Thompson, while overtaking another car in the suburb of Hornby, in September this year.
He was today sentenced to 10 months home detention, 250 hours of community service and disqualified from driving for two-and-a-half years.
Silcock must also pay $15,000 in reparations to the victims’ families, including $10,000 in emotion harm to Mr Hutt’s family and $5000 in medical costs to Mr Thompson.
Mr Hutt and Mr Thompson had been waiting with friends on a Hornby road when they were hit by a car driven by Silcock.
Mr Hutt was thrown 30 metres in the accident and died instantly, while Mr Thompson suffered a broken ankle.
Silcock left the scene after hitting the two, but handed himself into police the following day.
