There's going to be 320 houses in five communities dotted around the city

In three weeks time Christchurch residents displaced by the earthquakes will move into houses built specially by the Government.

There's going to be 320 houses in five communities dotted around the city.

To date, Christchurch people have appeared reluctant to move into temporary accommodation.

You might remember the fleet of campervans sent to the city after the February earthquake. Only one was used.

But with the red zone declared uninhabitable, the Government believes things have changed.

Hello

I have just been told that our new house which is to be constructed in Rolleston, Canterbury cannot go ahead until we have secured domestic insurance cover. The house was due to start on Monday after complying with all the BNZ bank requirements and all was well, however in the 11th hour we are now told unless we secure insurance the bank will not drawndown the funding. The company building the house has Contract Works Insuance, so the house will be insured whilst under construction. How is one to get an insurance company to go on risk for a house which is not yet constructed and has no practical completion. Can anyone help?

Temporary has a way of turning into permanent, I wonder where these familes who are convinced to move into these will be in 3 years time? Mobile home idea was simply rediculous - charging nearly 300$ p/w and people had to falk out for power and insurance onto of it. These are a little better - only if they are temporary! still waiting for eqc to inspect my house - lots of minor internal external damage and i have been marked green !

Hi John, we fully understand the extreme frustration being experienced by Chch residents in dealing with EQC.
My own experience relates to my recently deceased Mums home which has 3 claims lodged with EQC. I have rung them numerous times to discuss her home, and am constantly told that they can only discuss the matter with my MUM which unless thay have a direct dial line to heaven it is impossible. To enable me as excutor of her estate to discuss matters, I followed the correct procedures issued by EQC, by EMAIL last week, to verify my authority to act. Yesterday I was informed by a EQC supervisor that the EMAILED authority would take more than 3-4 weeks to be loaded against the claim numbers. My complaint is that EQC cannot reasonably perform the simplist of task in an expedient time frame to enable me to merely discuss the claims lodged. I believe the supervisor/s in unusual circumstances such as a death could have easily supplied a direct email address that enabled me to directly forward the authority to the supervisor so it could be loaded immediately which would allow me to DISCUSS THE DAMAGE AS PER THE CLAIMS lodged which we know will be in excess of $100,000 as it has similar damage as the adjoining unit which has already been assessed. My daughter, whom was working for EQC suggested I write to you as she advised me unless things were made public EQC simply left people in limbo. June Russell 03 465 1986
