People at the scene are saying about 200 people are trapped inside and screams can be heard from within the building.

“There are a lot of people in there,” says one woman currently working with emergency services.

Two woman interviewed by 3 News had just left the building when the quake struck.

My heart goes out to all those people devastated by the christchurch earthquake. I'm a 12 year old girl, but this is still really heartbreaking, to watch some of the trauma on television and all the people that have lost loved ones in the quake. God bless all xoxo

My 87 year old mother has been trying to contact one of her and my late father's dearest friends, Noeline Mills. Noeline's late husband fought in the Solomon Islands with my Dad. Noeline was living alone in Butler Street, Opawa. We would greatly appreciate any news of her. I also have students of mine in Christchurch. I wish them all, together with our good friend Noeline, safe passage through this horror.

While the moment should be focused on assisting those impacted by this tragedy, one can't help but also wonder about the reasons for such a catastrophic failure of a clearly modern building constructed in a known seismic region? The Romanesque-temple construction (not sure what it is) across the street doesn't appear to be damaged significantly, if at all. At the appropriate time, questions need to be asked.

My prayers are with you all. It is awesome to see passerby folks coming to the rescue of their countrymen and women. May you all find comfort in your grief and have clarity of mind as to what steps you need to take next.
