The Red Cross still has funds left

By Jessica Rowe

The Red Cross and other charities are giving special assistance to Cantabrians struggling to pay to heat their quake-damaged homes.

The Red Cross quake appeal has received $125 million in donations, and still has $16 million left to give.

But the Red Cross isn't the only quake fund that still has money to give away. The Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust has received $101 million, and has $37 million left; and the Mayoral Relief fund has received $7.4 million, and has $2.7m left.

Community advocate Mike Coleman says residents need the money sooner rather than later.

“There's so many issues on the east side and we've got millions of dollars in relief funds just sitting there. It's absurd that this is going on.”

The Prime Minister's Earthquake Appeal Trust plans to spend the remaining money on longer-term legacy projects like community facilities.

The Red cross are doing an amazing job of making sure the appeal funds go to where it is most needed. Personally, I'm pleased they that they take the time, and the effort, to target this money appropriately. It's the most responsible thing to do. Big pat on the back to the RED CROSS.

The available funds are most likely in some high interest account so hence not the urgency to use those funds on the very people who have lived in quake-damaged accommodation more than 24 months on from the original quake on 4.9.10. Is Christchurch a Labour strong-hold in most areas so therefore the lack of interest by CERA, GB and Co?
