Christchurch rattled by 4.8 quake

Christchurch has been rocked by a sharp jolt this afternoon.

Initial reports suggest the quake, which struck around 3:29, was a magnitude 4.8, 11km deep and centred 30km west of the city.

Leeston resident Tracey Pellow says it was a “short and sharp banger”.

“It was a nasty jolty one,” says Nicholas Smeaton. “Scarier than the one off Taranaki the other day.”

“It picked me up and dropped me where I was sitting,” says 3 News viewer Cathi.

“It was a strong, beastie one. It rolled for a while and felt like good tonnes behind it.”

Rolleston resident Neil Watson says his family felt the quake very strongly – but weren’t fazed.

“My two kids were upstairs playing on their Wii with a friend. I was downstairs, ran upstairs to see if they were okay, they all shouted ‘Woohoo! That was a good one’,” he told 3 News.

“The cat passed me and was gone!”

Meanwhile Waimakariri residents John and Sandra Durand say they felt the quake, which “was like the ground was rolling”.

There are no reports of injuries or damage at this stage.

I was playing Sinding's 'Rustle of Spring' on the grand piano at the Ngaio Marsh Retirement Village lounge when quake struck. The big piano was rolling from side to side (as was the stool I was sitting on) - some RUSTLE I must say. I kept playing and got a great reception from the 60 or more residents listening. A new experience for me (a 70 year-old!) though I felt quite 'shaken' by it!!

Today's quake felt like a 3.5 out here in New South Brighton it made things shake in the house but no damage. Hope my mates at work in the Red Zone are all safe that is my main concern after hearing it was a 4.8

Why don't you ask the people the EQ was under ... Christchurch only had a wobble, it was right under Rolleston but there has never been a mention of any there.
