Christchurch has been rocked by a sharp jolt this afternoon.
Initial reports suggest the quake, which struck around 3:29, was a magnitude 4.8, 11km deep and centred 30km west of the city.
Leeston resident Tracey Pellow says it was a “short and sharp banger”.
“It was a nasty jolty one,” says Nicholas Smeaton. “Scarier than the one off Taranaki the other day.”
“It picked me up and dropped me where I was sitting,” says 3 News viewer Cathi.
“It was a strong, beastie one. It rolled for a while and felt like good tonnes behind it.”
Rolleston resident Neil Watson says his family felt the quake very strongly – but weren’t fazed.
“My two kids were upstairs playing on their Wii with a friend. I was downstairs, ran upstairs to see if they were okay, they all shouted ‘Woohoo! That was a good one’,” he told 3 News.
“The cat passed me and was gone!”
Meanwhile Waimakariri residents John and Sandra Durand say they felt the quake, which “was like the ground was rolling”.
There are no reports of injuries or damage at this stage.
