Christchurch red zone residents left with nowhere to go

Wed, 05 Oct 2011 7:00p.m.

Home owners in Christchurch's red-zoned suburbs are starting to get a clearer picture of how much money they will get for their properties.

The problem is - for many it doesn't appear to be enough.

While the government has weighed in on one side of the scale - offering to pay the 2007 rateable value - has it simply caused an imbalance on the other side of the equation?

Homes in the green zone are selling well over value, and there are simply nowhere near enough affordable sections available.

So tonight Campbell Live begin a new series about hard working people who have all their equity in their homes, and nowhere to go from here.

Natasha Utting has our first instalment with Fred.

I'm sorry I have 3 broken houses and 2 demolished homes in the green zone with no chance of even finding out when they will be repaired or rebuilt as we are waiting on new DBH guidelines to be realeased. We have been waiting on one for over a year, We have 4 full mortgages to pay as EQC take months and months to pay the cap. No sign of these guidelines, most likely due to the election and no sign of having a home to live in, so I have run out of sympathy for the Red Zone. What about the people in the green zone that have no idea of when they can move ahead, at least the Red Zone have answers. We have no home and no indication of when we will get one. We have full mortgages on 2 now empty sections. Our kids have portaloos full of cobwebs at there school. There is so much more than the Red Zone.
