Heavy rain in Christchurch has produced some flooding of the Heathcote River.

The river burst its banks after rainfall of up to 4mm to 5mm an hour from late this morning, a Christchurch City Council spokeswoman said.

"Since the earthquakes, the river breaches its banks during a heavy downpour. It's happened about three times in eight months," she told NZ Newswire.

No properties were thought to have been badly damaged.

The water level had receded by late afternoon after the rain eased and the tide went down.
