New Zealanders' bank accounts took a battering last month, with figures just released showing an upturn in Christmas spending.
Paymark processed just over $4.6 billion for the month of December.
Spending on footwear was up 9 percent on last year, while the amount spent at clothing stores jumped 5 percent.
