Inglourious Basterds star Christoph Waltz is replacing Nicolas Cage as the villain in forthcoming superhero movie The Green Hornet.

The Austrian actor impressed film fans and critics with his portrayal of Nazi officer Hans Landa in Quentin Tarantino's World War Two action movie and he's set to fill the shoes of Hornet's arch-enemy Mr X, according to Hollywood Daily.

The casting news will come as a relief for eager fans of the comic book after the project was left in doubt following Cage's exit last week.

The movie, starring Seth Rogen as The Green Hornet, also suffered a setback when director Stephen Chow quit - only to be replaced by Michel Gondry.

The Green Hornet is set to hit theatres in the US in December 2010.
