The halls of the United Nations echoed with singing and chanting today as Helen Clark's arrival as head of the UN Development Programme was marked with a traditional powhiri.

A delegation led by the Maori King presented the former Prime Minister to her new UN family.

Miss Clark told the audience that poverty reduction would be at the top of her priorities.

Miss Clark was formally sworn in by the head of the UN Ban Ki-moon in a private ceremony yesterday.
