A melting ice sculpture of John Key in June was intended to make him ‘feel the weight’ of climate change, today New Zealanders told Key to ‘wake up!’ with a bulk calling of the Prime Minister at exactly 12:18pm.
28 flash mob events demonstrated in major cities nationwide, joining in a global movement of 130 countries to call their leaders at the specific time of 12:18pm.
The event was part of “The Global Wake Up Call” a joint effort of the TckTckTck Campaign which plays on the idea of a ticking clock counting down the effects of climate change.
New Zealanders were asked to unite together and bombard Key and Environment Minister Nick Smith with phone messages urging them to partake in the December Copenhagen climate talks.
Flash mobs in Auckland met at the Auckland Town Hall, Wellington descended on the Civic Square at lunchtime and Christchurch gathered at the City Mall.
The Wake Up Call planned at least 2400 flash mob events worldwide and was backed by major environment groups such as Greenpeace, Oxfam, WWF and the Age of Stupid.
