Hillary Clinton has announced that the US will contribute towards a fund worth $100 billion US dollars a year by 2020 to help poorer countries cope with climate change.

The US secretary of state was speaking at the summit in Copenhagen where she said that any US funds were contingent on World leaders reaching a broader climate pact at the talks.

“I have often quoted a Chinese proverb which says that when you are in a common boat you have to cross the river peacefully together. Well, we are in a common boat,” she said.

Negotiations have stalled between the two biggest carbon polluters the US and China, amid disputes between rich and poor countries.
