Amazing footage has been captured of an up-close encounter with two orca at Waitata Reach in the outer Pelorus Sound.
The footage was captured on Saturday by 3 News iWitness Isaac Macdonald and shows one orca getting close enough to “kiss” the camera.
Mr Macdonald describes the encounter as “one of the most insane moments I’ve ever had on the water”.
The orca were in an area which New Zealand King Salmon has applied for approval to build five new salmon farms.
The company’s application to the Environmental Protection Authority has prompted calls from locals to retain the whole of the Waitata Reach in Pelorus Sound as a natural area.
