Exams are awful - they can make or break a student, set them on a path for life, or send their dreams gurgling down the toilet.

Tutors are available, but they're expensive and not really an option if you're struggling to put food on the table.

Well, one woman has an ambitious plan to ensure free tuition for any child that wants it, anywhere in the country, and she's aiming to do it with kids barely out of school themselves.

Lachlan Forsyth went along during the most recent school holidays to meet the young tutors hoping to help the pupils following in their footsteps.

Teaching te reo Maori in schools is a step towards building the bi-cultural foundations of New Zealand. Though we are trying to portray New Zealand as an integrated society, there is no avoiding the fact that the curriculum is full of mainstream assimilation. Acknowledgement without dissent of the language might be a step towards equality within education. I understand the views of parents who do not wish for their child to learn Maori and cannot avoid but feel there is some racial influences involved. Views such as "What will my child gain?" or "my child is not Maori, so why should they?" highlight the views that Maori is a minority. Unfortunately the majority rules view of mainstream in no way acknowledges diversity to which we should be actively participating in as the most important thing in the world is its people no matter who.

Great idea. This will work and is a superb way to help students. The only problem is the government will not like it because it is not their idea. Just wait and see they will try to talk it down and hinder its progress?
