Closures are prompting outrage from communities

By Ally Mullord

Communities are protesting as more Post Shops close around the country.

Auckland’s Green Bay community will meet with MP David Cunliffe today to present a 1000-signature petition to keep their KiwiBank open.

The bank, which was the only one in the small suburb, closed seven weeks ago.

At the time the franchise owner told customers the closure was on a trial basis – so the community is trying to get it back.

Local resident Andrea Deeth says residents have since been told the KiwiBank has been closed permanently. She doesn’t understand why as she says the bank was running at a profit.

The community feels the bank’s closure is “a betrayal”, Ms Deeth says.

Ms Deeth says the bank was an essential service, especially as the suburb has three retirement homes, one of which has no van for residents to travel in.

“It was our bank and we really supported it… we’ll do anything to get that back.”

Ms Deeth says she hopes the meeting with Mr Cunliffe will let the community know what’s going on as “all sorts of rumours” are going around.

Mr Cunliffe will be collecting the petition to table in Parliament.

A petition handover was held in Dunedin yesterday to protest the closing of the Dunedin Metro Post Shop and KiwiBank.

The Dunedin petition had around 2000 signatures.
