Ms Reid says violence is made worse in some areas because of alcohol problems

Family and sexual violence will be the focus of talks by Auckland community leaders and Government representatives today.

The hui at Orakei Marae comes just two days after 16-year-old Raurangi Marino was jailed for 10 years for raping a five-year-old girl.

Ngaroimata Reid, for Whanau Tu Rangatira, says it's important they have leaders from several different communities to discuss the problem.

"Although we kind of all work under the same kaupapa, under whanau violence and family violence, our issues are very different," says Ms Reid.

Ms Reid says violence is made worse in some areas because of alcohol problems, whereas in other areas it's a lack of basic necessities.
