A Lower Hutt community group is protesting this afternoon against what it is calling Housing New Zealand's demolition of its community.

The Government department is in the process of demolishing 85 homes on Farmers Crescent. Seventy-five will be rebuilt, but only 15 houses will be state housing.

Pomare Community Voice spokesperson Patria Tamaka says local residents are frustrated.

“We’ve had meetings with housing New Zealand; we’ve sent letters, had reports, had reports about our issues.

“And nothing is happening, still the demolition is going. So the community thought it is time to rally and have a protest.”

Ms Tamaka says some families have been living in the community for 40 years and the destruction of their homes is devastating.

The same will be happening here in Glenn Innes. This is the privatization of Housing Corp and part of Nationals policy of turning it's back on the poor
