Inevitably, there are people in Red and Green who think their colours are wrong

Inevitably, there are people in Red and Green who think their colours are wrong

On June 23, Christchurch was carved up into coloured zones.

“What colour are you?” became the biggest question in the city. Red, Orange or Green?

  1. The Red Zone is to be cleared of all housing.
  2. Orange could go either way.
  3. Green is business as usual.

People in the Green Zone can still make insurance claims, deal with EQC and so on.

But the simpler and easier procedure of accepting the Government’s offer, moving on and getting on with your life elsewhere, isn’t available in the Green Zone.

Inevitably, there are people in Red and Green who think their colours are wrong.

Red Zone people are desperate to stay.

Green Zone people are desperate to go.

Interesting article and I hope it's followed up on. No mention of the white zone. The longer people are feeling that they are 'held hostage' by their house and land, the more they want to leave. 75% of residents on our street are currently living in OZ (had to as most lost jobs after the quake and need to pay mortgages). A number had businesses in the CBD and are going through hell with the EQC and insurers for payouts. Like me, they came believing the move was temporary. The longer we are left in 'limbo land' with no payouts, the more I'm hearing from my neighbours that they don't plan on returning. You may say 'glad to get rid of you', but a large percentage of these neighbours were business owners (employing large numbers of people), paying high taxes, spending large dollars ... come on EQC - time is up!

My parents house is the one in between the 2 owned by the families in this video. The road is in a terrible state and so is the sewerage system. My mother has passed away since this was filmed and my father is in a home. They wanted it to be zoned red. The stress of trying to sort out the house has been very difficult for our family and we would like some answers. I hope TV3 will continue to follow up this story.

He is right, what they have done it right. They can't look at each property, nothing would get done. They are looking at the bigger picture. Individuals are looking at just there own. It's like having your house painted, if you stood there with painter telling him which areas need painting and which don't it would take forever, you just get the whole house painted. At end of the day with any luck for those who are clearly in wrong zone there will be time and resources for them to be reviewed and zone altered.

It was our church that you videoed. you are right that our land is in the green zone and yet as you can see it is badly damaged. We have not been told what to do to fix it and obviously it needs fixing before we can rebuild. You may not know that the church is classed as commercial and therefore the church has to pay for the repair not EQC. As a church we exist on donations and are a charity so who pays for the repair because we cannot afford to pay for repair and I am sure that the insurance company wont be too pleased for to use the money for the building to repair the land. What is the government going to do for community groups like ourselves? I have sent emails to Prime Minister John Key and Minister Brownlee but not resolution has been given to this. If we are in the green zone, which we are, then we would like to use the insurance money to start building again to work in the community but we are unable to since CERA has not told us what needs to be done to repair and how much it is going to cost and who is going to pay. It could end up with all the properties around the church being repaired because they are residential but not the church. Your view and help in this would also be appreciated. Many thanks.

Hi I am so pleased you are exposing these issues. We are in a tiny strip of orange zoned land in Avonside - people are at breaking point, we havnt had sewerage or services since February, all of our equity has gone. People are desperate. We have severe land damage, yet across the road is red, yet we are orange. People need to know now. lets put on the pressure to get an answer out of the government as soon as possible.
