A fundraising comedy event featuring a new Flight of the Conchords single has raised more than $1.3 million for medical research for children.

The Red Nose Day: Comedy for Cure Kids ended at midnight last night, raising $1.3 million and exceeding Cure Kids' expectations.

The Conchords wrote the song ‘Feel Inside (and Stuff Like That)’ especially for the event and it was sung by a cast of singing stars. The song and album went to number one on iTunes within 90 minutes.

Cure Kids chief executive Vicki Lee said she couldn't believe how generous New Zealanders were.

"We are really overwhelmed. Comedy for Cure Kids was a New Zealand first and the donations go significantly beyond our expectations," she said.

Every dollar would go towards medical research.

The event at Auckland's Q Theatre was hosted by 7 Days' stars Jeremy Corbett and Paul Ego and featured celebrities, politicians and sports stars including the All Blacks.

The Conchords' single is available on iTunes, with proceeds going to Cure Kids.
