Consumer New Zealand is calling on the government to get tough on deficiencies seen in children's highchairs, cots and prams.
A study has found that a third of all children's products tested pose dangers to infants - including falling and suffocating.
Consumer's Sue Chetwin says it is international best practice to impose higher safety standards, so our politicians have no excuse.
“We haven’t really seen any new product safety standards since 2001, so that’s 10 years. Then you look at Australia which had a review of its product safety system, they’ve now got 28 mandatory standards aimed at protecting babies and young children,” she says.
According to Ms Chetwin voluntary manufacturer standards do not offer good enough protection.
