An Auckland policeman has landed himself in hot water after allowing two punters at a charity motorsport event to faux-attack him and hold a gun to his head for a photograph.

The image posted to social networking sites shows the uniformed officer bent over his car, arms pulled behind his back as two men, one brandishing a rifle, restrain him and pose for the camera.

The photograph, taken at the Cannonball Run event in Auckland, entertained many online bloggers but the police bosses are not laughing, issuing a statement saying the image was staged and "not appropriate".

"The images record a police officer's participation in a charity fundraising event, but are not appropriate," Waitemata police district commander Superintendent William Searle said.

"Until such time as the full circumstances are established we're not in a position to comment any further."

Certainly some of the hundreds who viewed the photo online agreed, arguing it probably was not wise to publish hoax attacks on those charged with protecting citizens.

i think the officer deserves a pat on the back as there were 500+ people with a task to get a funny photo with a cop and if this officer did not stay and assist in these photos there would have been 500+ people running around auckland harassing the police from there jobs plus of which many would have agreeded which would have been a worse look while at work, atleast this one was assigned there, all this photo shows is ploice can interact with the public and have a sense of humour to, my opion is the same as hundreds of others it is just the minority of a few who have nothing beter to do but find anything to complain about, i hope this officer has no serious trouble from this, p.s im not a cop in south auckland! haha

I agree with wondering, there are better things in our country to be concerned about than investigating a policeman taking a photo for a CHARITY event. Maybe go catch some real crim's!

Blubbery guy on the right sunnies on his head looks familiar from the Counties Manukau Policing district. His stance and posture gives him away as a cop. Though not 100% sure I could pick him out of a line up of other blubbery red neck guys with sunnies on the head cruising around in squad cars in South Aucks...

I am wondering why the police are investigating this when there is a huge back log of serious crimes against children left ignored. So it was an ill advised stunt that was probably an attempt to make the police more public friendly and build much needed rapport with the community. An incident of a man genuinely pulling a gun on women and children has little chance of being given priority of attendance in the Waitemata police district Is that not a matter that should be investigated instead
