Only 400 or so Sumatran tigers are left in the wild

Only 400 or so Sumatran tigers are left in the wild

A well-known toilet-tissue brand is being accused of sourcing its paper from Indonesian rainforests, the home of critically-endangered Sumatran tigers.

Greenpeace, the Green Party, and WWF New Zealand have spent eight months investigating Cottonsoft, and sent samples to a US laboratory for testing.

Greenpeace spokesman Nathan Argent says traces of mixed tropical hardwoods were found.

"Cottonsoft is owned by one the world's most notorious rainforest destroyers, Asia Pulp and Paper, and over the years Greenpeace has repeatedly shown that Asia Pulp & Paper's suppliers are trashing tiger habitats to feed its paper mills."

Cottonsoft has refused to divulge where it sources its paper.

Greenpeace says companies such as Kraft, Nestle, Unilever, Tesco and Carrefour have stopped working with Asia Pulp & Paper because of its actions.

"We're asking customers to tell retailers to stop selling toilet paper that has come from trashed rainforests," says Mr Argent.

One in four rolls of toilet paper sold in New Zealand are made of paper sourced from Indonesia.

There are only about 400 Sumatran tigers left in the wild.

Daex, it's not as simple as "smart tigers packing up and moving elsewhere till the trees grow back". They are territorial, and can't just be pushed out of one area into another without loosing a breading season at the least. They are top of the food chain, so once the trees are gone, so is the food, for a lot longer than the first return growth, providing there isn't erosion in the meantime. If the forestry company isn't talking about a management program (green corrodoors, relocation, replanting) you can bet the tigers are screwed, along with the less impressive wildlife/fauna that doesn't make the press. Sustainable forests, easy, just like we do here. There isn't even any need for these idiots to fell jungle then lie about it to satisfy the market. I don't know why you'd bother defending someone else's lie, it's no smarter than all the fluffy greenies that want to recycle paper and end up wasting the chance for a carbon sink.

This is a load of b/s, you need to realise that 1 tigers aren't as dumb as people think, 2 Indonesia trees mature twice as fast than any other place in the world, 3 all the evidence i have seen is a picture of a tiger and a picture of trees being cut down which you can find on google, 4 "sourcing" paper which the land in which is brought or used is probably sold by the government, 5 if anyone of you numb minded people would stop to think all toilet paper no matter recycled or not, started from a tree so either way it "killed" some other animal if you believe animals are that dumb there is such a thing called "Migration" and "Adaptation". Green peace is just full of lies and rumours. grow a spin and research before you go and ruin some ones job and career and their lives.

Ian this is urgent, The Tigers don't have much longer at that level of existence. These companies will bow to public pressure and by continually doing this hopefully the pressure on the rainforests will ease.
