It has been more than a decade since the Backstreet Boys and ‘N Sync were chart toppers, but with groups like One Direction creating chaos across the globe the boy band looks like it could be back.

British boy band The Wanted have reached number one in the UK and the US with chart-topping performances, and are currently in New Zealand for the first time.  Band member Jay McGuinness says the time is right for a boy band comeback.

“In the UK for ages it got kind of indie and rock, and now pop’s made a mega comeback with Gaga and Jessi Jay, and hopefully we can  lump ourselves in there too,” he says.

Fellow member Nathan Sykes says it is all about creativity.

“Music is whatever you want to create, so when you’re in the writing business which is what we're doing we can direct it wherever we want it to go, which is cool,” says Sykes.

And as the definition of cool changes, the band admits they will need to change to – it’s all part of trying to stay on top.

But for now, if it's success they are chasing, it's safe to say they've got what they wanted.
