Kiwi drivers have claimed two places in tonight’s top 10 shootout at Bathurst – Shane van Gisbergen is sixth, while Fabian Coulthard set the second quickest time in qualifying.
It remains one of Bathurst's greatest moments – Steven Richards shared victory with Murphy in 1999. But Richards’ name will be forever linked with his father Jim’s infamous victory and speech in 1992.
“It's gone down in Bathurst folklore I guess,” says Richards. “The emotions of that day and the way that it finished up.”
Bathurst's other famous family are the Johnsons – Dick as much for his at times rotten luck as his three victories.
“At the time it was the worse thing that had happened, but as time went on it turned into the best thing,” says Johnson.
Bathurst though is all about comebacks. Just take Fabian Coulthard’s lap-one tumble two years ago. Tonight he's in the running for pole position.
