Court appearance after Auckland bar death

The man charged with assault following the death of a man at a south Auckland bar on Saturday has appeared in court and may face more serious charges after Christmas.

Ta James Ramea, 28, appeared in Manukau District Court on Monday, charged with assaulting Aaron Challenger, 30, outside Club 220, also known as Woody's Bar, on Great South Rd in Manurewa, TVNZ reported.

It is alleged the victim gatecrashed Ramea's birthday celebrations and when he was asked to leave a struggle resulted in his death.

Police have indicated more serious charges will be laid after Christmas.

Ramea was released on bail until February 1.
