Daniel Craig in Cowboys & Aliens

Daniel Craig in Cowboys & Aliens

By Kate Rodger

If you're scratching your heads wondering what this movie is about fear not, I am here to ease the confusion! It's about cowboys, and its about aliens.

James Bond (Daniel Craig) wakes up the desert, with no memory and a weird metal bracelet on his arm.

It's not long before that bracelet proves useful as the aliens part of this story kicks in with a vengeance.

Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) rides in, he's the tough guy in town. He and 007 gather a posse to chase the dastardly aliens, who seem to like to lasso folk.

The heartfelt truth is, I love cowboys and I love aliens.  In fact, a western and a sci-fi are two of my favourite movies of all time.  But it seems putting them both in the same movie is a double downer. My Cowboys & Aliens encounter was a mostly dull and lifeless one, despite good performances from a good cast. A lighter, far more irreverent hand would have served director Jon Favreau better.

So shoot me for being a purist, but I'll keep my cowboys and my aliens separate from now on.

Two stars.

Saw it, enjoyed it. Dull and lifeless it definitly is not.
