Cromwell car crash kills one and injures three

One person has died and four others are in a serious condition following a car crash in Cromwell.

A sedan and courier van collided on the corner of State Highway 8B and State Highway 6 at 5:45pm.

The driver of the sedan, a 29-year-old male, died at the scene.

Police say the car was carrying five seasonal orchard workers and survivors had to be cut from the wreckage.

Rescue helicopters were sent to the scene from Queenstown and Dunedin.

Three people have been sent to Dunedin Hospital by helicopter while one has been taken by ambulance to Dunstan Hospital.

The driver of the van received minor injuries and is now being comforted by family and victim support.

The intersection is the turn-off to Queenstown and Wanaka.
