While heavy snow and extreme cold temperatures continue to plague central and eastern Europe, Britain has had its first heavy snowfall of the winter.
The snow has forced a number of airports to cancel flights, and stranded many drivers on highways overnight.
3 News Europe correspondent Melissa Davies joined Firstline from London’s Heathrow Airport, where runways have reopened.
Planes are departing but services have yet to return to normal, and the airport is crowded with delayed passengers.
The airport put a new snow response plan in place after a large snowfall caused chaos in 2010 – they cancelled 30 percent of all flights before a snowflake had fallen, aiming to prevent passengers arriving at the airport to find their flight cancelled.
However the process hasn’t been perfect – some passengers say they boarded their plane, only to sit on the tarmac for eight hours.
The snow has stopped but a freezing fog is predicted to move in on the city, causing black ice. Council workers are laying grit on the roads in preparation.
