Prosecutors will today outline their case against four people allegedly involved in military-style camps in the Urewera country in 2006 and 2007.

A jury of two men and 10 women was chosen on Monday to hear the case in the High Court in Auckland against four people, including prominent Tuhoe activist Tame Iti, charged following the high-profile police raids on October 15, 2007.

Iti, Te Rangikaiwhiria Kemara, Emily Bailey and Urs Signer all face charges of participating in an organised criminal group and of unlawful possession of firearms.

The Crown will open its case against the accused when the trial resumes on Tuesday morning, using a power point presentation to aid their case.

Once this is done, each of the four defence teams will make a brief address on behalf of their clients before evidence from the first of up to 90 crown witness is called.

The empanelling of the jury to hear a case scheduled to take up to three months took nearly four hours on Monday, partly because three people originally chosen were subsequently excused after raising issues about why they could not serve with Justice Rodney Hansen.

Justice Hansen subsequently told jurors not to search the internet for information, saying they must judge the case solely on the basis of what they hear in court.

Eighteen people were set to stand trial but one died and 13 who were facing firearms charges only had them dropped in September 2011.

That followed a Supreme Court ruling that unlawfully filmed footage could be used against those charged with membership of an organised criminal group and not those facing firearms charges only.

Justice Hansen told the jurors the fact these 13 had the charges dropped was irrelevant to their considerations.
