Rain has started falling in Northland, as the country prepares for Cyclone Lusi.
Howling winds, furious swells and torrential downpours are in store for much of the North Island this weekend – and Civil Defence are warning to be prepared.
Boaties in Northland are taking notice, battening down the hatches as the storm approaches.
In Auckland, the worry is the 130km gale force winds. Flooding, road closures and power outages are expected.
High ocean swells are also expected on the east coast, and that brings the risk of coastal erosion right along Auckland's north eastern coastline.
