In a two-day visit to Christchurch, the Dalai Lama has given inspiration to thousands of quake-hit Cantabrians.
He personally greeted bereaved families and blessed quake victims at Christchurch Hospital yesterday.
Outpatient Nick Walls suffered severe injuries in the February earthquake after being trapped under rubble for 10 hours in the Pyne Gould builiding. He was invited to meet the spiritual leader.
"For the patients that met him today, I think it is just another little bit of inspiration for the recovery," he says.
Survivor Ann Brower was lucky to survive the earthquake after being pulled from a wrecked bus on Columbo St. She was thrilled to speak with the Dalai Lama.
"It is something you never expect to happen," says Ms Brower. "Some people say it is once-in-a-lifetime, but really it is a never-in-a-lifetime experience."
It's the third time the 75-year old Tibetan leader visited Christchurch, this time bringing with him an uplifting message.
"Develop determination and build new town, new city, new home, even more happier new town," he said. "You can do."
Five thousand gathered to hear his inspirational words.
"I suppose it is a show of connection and support from a different culture," says Ben Campbell.
The Dalai Lama is now off to Australia for a 10-day tour to meet with opposition politicians and Buddhist communities.
