Damon Albarn is to step out from behind the scenes to make an appearance in his new opera.

The Blur and Gorillaz star put his music career on hold this year to focus on writing a new stage show about 16th century English scientist John Dee

The project, titled Doctor Dee, is a collaboration with famed theatre director Rufus Norris and marks Albarn's second opera project. He previously composed 2007's Monkey: Journey To The West.

The new show will feature one major difference - Albarn will be appearing on stage, but he is adamant he will not be wearing period costume, telling BBC Radio 4's Today Programme, "I'm myself. I'm not walking around in a ruff and tights."

Doctor Dee will premiere in Manchester, England next month.
