Kiwi golfer Danny Lee has made a strong start to the latest PGA Tour event in Georgia to lie one shot off the lead after his opening round.

Lee, who needs to finish the season inside the top-125 to retain his tour card, compiled a five-under par 65 at The McGladrey Classic to share second place with Zach Johnson, Davis Love III and David Toms.

England's Greg Owen holds the clubhouse lead following a six-under par 64 at the penultimate tournament of the season.

The 22-year-old Lee went to the turn at five-under after three birdies and an eagle at the seventh before adding a fourth birdie at the 11th to move into a share of the lead.

But a bogey on the par-four 16th saw him slip back behind Owen.

Lee is ranked 159th on the tour and 219 in the world.
