David Shearer

David Shearer

It wasn't quite X Factor, but one David had to go.

David Cunliffe was voted off  22-12, we understand, and David Shearer found himself where Helen Clark, David Lange, Norman Kirk and Walter Nash have been before him - leader of the Labour Party.

In late 2006, John Key joined us on this programme as the brand new leader of the National Party.

He was fresh-faced, from outside the political establishment and full of a self-belief that came from success before politics.

Two years later, he was Prime Minister.

Today, Labour fired back with their version.

"Is Shearer Labour's Answer to John Key?" He will be if the media insist in reporting it that that way.

David Shearer is a very different politician to John Key. Both entered party politics very late. Both are human males and are NZers but thats where the similarity ends. John Key was a multi millionaire Forex Trader with the infamous Merill Lynch. David Shearer workded for the UN. How different can you get?

To take the Labour Party back to its roots it would be necessary to reintroduce compulsory unionism and that aint gonna happen. Although if the world economy insists on decaying to an extreme it may be a possibility!!

I think the fact that 66 percent of those who are elligible to vote didnt vote for John Key... they either voted to the left or didnt show up to vote at all... shows that John Key has a mandate for nothing this time around. I think the people of New Zealand are going to be very reactionary in the next three years... there is alot of disenchantment in politicians themselves. But the fact that labour didnt go to its membership to ask for their opinion was a big mistake... Key is clearly not the answer with a third of the population voting for him, a third against and a third abstaining.... thats a huge vote of no confidence in John Key himself.

@Fellowes Media cheerleaders for National … you have got to be kidding … TV3 are already fawning all over Shearer, just need to watch Campbell Lives sugary interview last night of him. And 3 News and always like to paint a left bias in their news reporting. Not that it did the Labour party any good in the elections. Labour supporters need to stop coming up with excuses and realize the country voted for the current government with one of the biggest margins ever. Once we are done with Sherarer’s ‘I’m just a bloke down the pub nonsense’ the real challenges will start for him. Firstly getting a bit of authority and not just being a puppet leader. Will be interesting to see if he is the Labour leader that contests the next election. Anything can happen in the next 3 years.

Duncan how can you possibly have an inside source for the vote count? It was a secret ballot this morning. What that means is that even the caucus MPs don't know the vote count. Presently, only the two most senior Party officials know it. Or are you claiming that Moira and/or Chris have leaked to you? Not plausible Duncan - they have more integrity than that - much more likely you are talking up nonsense from your old guard sources again.

Any chance that we may have a neutral media for the next three years and not one acting as cheerleader for National every step of the way?

The next 3 years will be interesting. It might take that long to sort out the deep divisions in the Labour Party that have been exposed. I really hope David can take the party back to its roots.
