Today is the second annual White Heart Day - a day that organisers hope will become a national day of remembrance for the victims of violent crime.

They want legal struggles and campaigns for judicial reform to be set aside for one day, to focus on celebrating the lives of those they've lost.

“We remember our loved ones every day but this is I think an important day for New Zealanders,” says the trust’s Hamish Cowan.

Tracey Marceau’s daughter Christie was murdered a year ago and she says while she is still struggling to deal with her loss today is important.

“We’ve had a very good friend support system,” she told Firstline this morning, “At the moment I have to turn the negative into the positive and that’s just what gets me through and keeps me busy, trying to keep Christie’s name out there.”
