A 26-year-old rock climber found dead in Central Otago yesterday morning has been named.

He was Matthew Byron Allison, a British national who has been in New Zealand since February.

Police say Mr Allison fell about 155m to his death off Chinaman's Bluff, northwest of Queenstown, while trying to free a rope.

Mr Allison's climbing companion, 37-year-old James Briscall of Wanaka, was rescued unharmed.
