Kiwi Brent Newdick lies 22nd after the first event in the men's decathlon at the London Olympics.

Newdick ran 11.10 seconds for the 100m into a slight headwind in the Olympic Stadium to pocket 838 points.

His personal best for the distance is 10.86 set in 2010.

American Ashton Eaton, favourite for the event, ran 10.35 to lead the competition with 1011 points.

Other events on the first day of the event are long jump, shot put, high jump and 400m.
