Atlanta four piece Deerhunter have been labelled as the most indie band in the world.

Described as everything from art rock to ambient, to post punk-psychedelic and even shoe-gaze.

However defining Deerhunter's sound is not easy. Just ask their lead singer Bradford Cox.

“You know I wouldn't really know how to describe it. Ask my mum, she might have a good description,” Cox says.

Although their sound may be hard to pin down, the band is renowned for their intense live performances.

Cox used to be a fan of pouring fake blood all over his hands and face on stage, while wearing a dress.

But he says that is not their style anymore.

“You know I think a lot of that was overcompensation. I don't think we were confident musically. I think we're still kind of getting used to each others musical interactions,” he says.

Deerhunter formed in 2001 in Atlanta and in that time have gone through plenty of line up changes.

It is clear they do things their own way, as can be seen by Deerhunter's only music video.

Cox is also critical of the state of independent music.

“But I don't really think ‘indie’ means anything anymore. It's all very ambiguous,” he says.

They have just been booked for another Australian tour and tonight they play their last New Zealand gig at Wellington's San Francisco Bath House.

Ambiguous or not, it is clear people want more.
