A judge has postponed the trial of an 88-year-old former member of a Nazi hit squad until next week for medical reasons.

Aachen state court Presiding Judge Gerd Nohl's decision Tuesday came after defence attorneys for Heinrich Boere argued their client could not properly hear the proceedings.

Nohl ordered hearing aids be provided for Boere and said the trial would resume next week.

Boere faces the possibility of life in prison if convicted of the killings of a bicycle-shop owner, as well as a pharmacist and another civilian while part of an SS death squad in Holland during World War II.

He has confessed to the killings and his attorneys have not yet said how they will counter those statements, but he could argue he was following orders.
