Demon stunt may risk NZ defence force reputation

Three New Zealand soldiers may now be wondering what possessed them to take part in a poor taste PR stunt that has cost them their posts in Afghanistan.

The trio is being sent home for putting a Demon energy drink sticker on an American bomb, and writing their own message on it - "Dear Taliban, enjoy this Demon".

Greens defence spokesman Keith Locke says the company has hurt the soldiers' careers, and the men have risked the reputation of the New Zealand defence force.

Demon had arranged for drinks to be sent to them in Afghanistan in exchange for the sticker stunt - but are not responding to interview requests.

Granted - yes it was a poor taste stunt, but to have them brought home is beyond belief. The Taliban are our enemy and our soldiers are over in Afghanistan risking their lives in a peacemaking and rebuilding role where apparently we have been doing a good job helping the locals. The Demon beverage company didnt help either. Well at last Keith Locke has got some cheap publicity for himself and his Green Party. You cant blame the 3 young soldiers if they resign from the NZ Army as their career paths would always be blocked by all the political interference from the minor parties. eg The Greens have only 11% of the vote??????

What a load of bolix, NZ is too PC. It's a ridiculous move recalling NZ troops when more are required over there to win this war. Funny though, how Demon drinks are now seen now an "evil" company because they did the honourable thing of supporting our troops overseas. I wonder how this would have played out if the Taliban wrote a message to our boys in Bagram on one of the many rockets they fire at them?
Would immigration now be opening our doors for those enemies to claim asylum and live here permanently?

I think the only people that have the right to criticize these guys are people that have been in Afghanistan themselves. Not someone from the green party that only made a fuss so they could get their face on tv for two minutes. At least i know these guys will still get a heroes welcome when they are back.

Im sorry are we not at war?...do we not teach our boys to hate the ememy? If they dont have the mental frame of mind to hate the people they are killing in the name of defending us and our way of life, how do you expect them to perform the duties they have to? Buggar the PC these boys are human to...

@ Nat - rebuilding a country? Really? With bombs?? Now that's technological advancement.

Whether a sticker is on a bomb or not, it's still a bomb. This whole conversation is completely retarded. We don
't mind killing them, just don't insult them while we do it??

Seriously New Zealand - WTF.

Our military is not the same as the salvage murderess over the seas at war..
Our military think like real human, like ourselves relaxing without awarenes what war is really about..
War is to kill and destroy and it does'nt really matter if you are the king or loyal highness of the world..
God bless our New Zealand military at war and keep safe kiwi..You are playing with fire..

NZ Govt. take a look at yourselves while you sit on your imaginary thrones and get real! Everybody does or is very tempted to something silly even if just once in their lives. Some actions regrettable of course and the offenders or people concerned mostly remorseful but what harm have these lads really done? Concentrate on Mr English who claims that he has no vested interest in his Wellington home - what a 'bl....' joke and yet he presents himself as honest and wanting to do what's right and fair for NZ with his current portfolio as Finance Minister. He, like the some of the other Politicians in the this government are nothing but a pack of bludgers, pushing the claims policy to the absolute edge and don't deserve any more bonuses, subsidies, discounts etc than the any other person on Gods green earth. They chose to go into Parliament, they understood the nature of the job might take them away from home & family - boo-hoo, that's life. You don't like it, get another job and stop taking honest tax payers money to feed your greed!
Other employees DON'T have the luxury of subsidised rentals nor in a lo of instances, they don't have the choice of where to live! So leave the Army lads alone, they do a damn sight more work than politicians, have to assume responsibility when on location and their lives are more at risk then some moronic Green party member getting an email threat. Sure they get some compensation for the situations they are sent in to - BUT it isn't anywhere near the $32,000 or so supplementary rental income that English and the rest of the thieves in Parliament receive!
Tell them off, give them verbal warnings for file but to send them home for being human and adding some humour into their otherwise pressured situations is just being totally stupid.

Well, I for one thing what they did is stupid and tasteless. My husband is currently serving overseas, and I would expect that he would be sent home (at the very least!) if he chose to do something as stupid as these three guys did. They are there to do a job, not put a black mark against our defence force. We have one of the best reputations in the World, yes that is true, but idiots like this don't help that whatsoever. Well they can expect to be on base for quite some time now, as I know they won't get deployed again anytime in the near future!!
