Designer couture on a budget

Fashion Week may be remembered this year because of a little grey jersey with a pink bow on it.

It appeared in Trelise Cooper’s runway parade on Wednesday, and no one batted an eyelid.

Except for one Herald writer – their gossip columnist, Rachel Glucina – who recognised it as being strikingly similar to a top she had tried on in London recently.

Trelise Cooper would not talk to Campbell Live, but she told the Herald on Sunday that the design was offered to her in April.

It looks like it was also offered to Top Shop.

As we were discussing this earlier today, one of Campbell Live’s producers Claudine Maclean reckoned she could copy them both.

And so, she did.

You ought to dig deeper into Trelise Cooper. A few years ago she used the copyright logo of a well known youth organisation on a garment. The organisation commented on it but was ignored and not in a position to fund a legal challenge, nor wanting the publicity. You have to wonder how many other times it happens !

It is total fantasy to think that designers sit in a room and design all their styles for a new season. The fact is that the a large part of the industry is based on using ideas that are already in the marketplace overseas. The trouble is that many "designers" often buy from the same stores overseas, and end up with the same or similar styles in their ranges. Not sure exactly what happened in this particular case but lets face it, creating new fashion styles is a bit like asking a chef to create a new dish, there just isn't that much that hasn't been done before.

I found this story particularly interesting as it reminds me of another NZ designer. Im not sure exactly what the back story is in this case, but one established and successful NZ designer has been known to photograph herself in foreign designers' changing rooms wearing outfits and then send them back to her workroom to be created under her name.
