Design is often thought of as the icing on the cake, nice to have, but not essential.
In the UK, design-led projects have led to a reduction in violence in hospital emergency departments, reduced the level of infection in hospitals and improved water use.
David Kester is the former head of the UK design council and spoke to Firstline about the importance of design to boosting New Zealand's economy.
