Social Development Minister Paula Bennet has hit back at Destiny Church for saying it's "discriminated" against when it comes to Government funding for social programmes.

Destiny Church invited four leading Maori MPs to attend a service in Auckland last weekend and openly asked them for more Government money.

But Ms Bennett says Destiny has already received $860,000 in Government funds in the past year.

Ms Bennett says Destiny often lobbies the Government for funding and often complains when it doesn't get what it wants.

Chargone - when the govt funds others to do charity work and serving the needy thats great. When it funds churches, we feel there is always the possibility of a Christian or a specific churches ideology being part of the service and that is not right. Overseas missionaries do good work but at the same time they peddle their beliefs and try to save souls to their way of thinking and that is wrong. They use candy and coca cola to sway the kids and I despise that type of religious manipulation. For a govt (state) to fund religious organizations (churches) then you will have other churches wanted money and wondering why that church got more money than this church. Church and state should be separated and I remain shocked at how so many NZ politicians and many Maori ones are so intertwined and supportive of this kind of funding and unholy alliance. Our govt needs to fund and set up and support its own programs and stop depending on churches to do their job for them. Bias and bigotry and greed grow when church and state are so closely linked. There are more non-christians in this country than you may believe and we want a govt that is of; by and for all citizens equally no matter what their beliefs are.

Cry on baby Brian who hates homosexuals. Cry baby cry for more money. Poor baby Brian blessing the Maori politicians on tv on that stage to gain more power and more money. Stupid we are to allow our government to give one red cent to any church. Greed raises its ugly head in the disguise of helping people. Let our government set up its own programs to help those in need and let Tamaki fund his own schools. Stupid politicians on that stage sucking up to brian and the media for more votes etc. Bless me brian bigot, bless my soul and cry on baby Brian, cry on.

Anon: Destiny church aside (it's incredibly dubious at best) i'm disgusted by your ill informed (and apparantly rather bigoted) opinion. you do realise that most of the time, when the government funds churches doing stuff, it's social work? generally speaking, by funding the churches doing what they're supposed to do anyway, they cut out a lot of needless beurocracy (some auditing work is all that's required), minimum. that's also why we have tax rebates, btw. the charities do social work the government would otherwise have to do, and the tax rebate is essentually the government paying for the services. they just keep the public happier still by letting them feel good about donating money, and feel good about being 'given' money. the whole process hits a lot of good buttons. (donations to charities doing work over sees also count toward their 'foreign aid' obligations due to this system)

Richard Lewis comes across as pure scum, he can't hide it as well as self ordained tamaki does. Shouldn't he (richard) be running security at some low grade nite club? It would suit him more. He certainly has no public skills outside the inclusive brianwashing services they hold and despite what he says they do hold women a few teirs lower than men in their archaic thinking. They are wrong and most of what they stand for is way off todays knowledge of life on earth. Organisations such as these are only there to keep the gap in society. Quite ofetn those at the top do not personally believe in what they preach but alot of people give a lot of tax free money to them to stand there and reinterpret an ancient novel in any way they want. Untill we as humans wake up we will not evolve any further

This man is a fraud. If someone could not afford to donate, a true church would never turn them away. This guy is just running a money making scheme. He will pay in the end when he has to be judged himself.

If Destiny's use of taxpayers funds are audited without bias and the funds are used properly for the project as applied for then neither the tax payer nor Destiny should have grounds for complaint. I would assume that audits and assessments of proper use are publicly available? Let's hear what the funds were used for and how well they were used.....
