Paying of tithes is very common in many religion. Supernumeraries of Opus Dei contribute 100% of the earnings to their organisation.

I have decided to start my own religion, I am only accepting donations above $100,000. For any donations over $100,000 I will give you a personally autographed bible from god, or my dog, they are one and the same. And any donations over $1,000,000 I will give a free (paid by you) ride into space.

Oh yes, and I will build a shrine to myself in a major city, that once the donations flow in I shall rename alienland.
