There wasn’t much to smile about for Ford fans, but the fanatics have remained faithful.
It may have been a clean sweep for Holden at the Bathurst 1000 last weekend, but Ford fans are keeping the faith. In fact, they’re almost creating it.
One such fan – who hasn’t missed a Bathurst since “Adam was a cowboy” – is Grant Wilkinson of Kerikeri. He kitted himself out in his Ford gear, and was a 'little' distraught after the race. But nearly a week later, he’s found a way to provide some solace.
“They may have won but how many of them didn’t finish?”
Wilkinson says that despite the heavy defeat by Holden over the last few Bathurst races, Ford is still number one in his books and other Ford fanatics out there.
“You live the faith, it doesn’t leave you cause Holden has been a bit lucky recently,” he said.
Call it creative accounting – and Holden supporters will definitely call it that – but when Jim Beam Racing’s entry of James Courtney and Warren Luff in their Falcon FG are the only Ford to feature in this year’s top 5, then creative accounting is called for he says.
“Percentage-wise, a lot more of them (Holden) didn’t make it than us (Ford). Ford is way more reliable,” says Wilkinson.
Of the 30 entrants in the race, 11 were Ford (37%) and 19 Holden (63%). Three Holdens (75%) failed to finish the race of four cars (Ford 25%).
“See, the numbers don’t lie…more Holdens came up short than the percentage they had in the race. You can rely on a Ford, that’s for sure,” says Wilkinson.
