An eight-kilometre diesel spill is causing trouble for motorists on State Highway 29, at the top of the Kaimai ranges.
The spill extends for four kilometres on either side of the summit in the west-bound lanes, say police.
Contractors are on their way, but won't be on site until around 9:30am.
"The road is wet and the spill is causing problems for vehicles," police said in a statement.
"Signage is in place but some drivers appear to be ignoring the danger."
Motorists are asked to be careful, especially on the Hamilton side.
